“If your mind is released permanently from self-grasping, there is no doubt that you will be released permanently from suffering.” - Saraha, quoted in Modern Buddhism

Do you ever feel stuck? According to Buddhism, we can initially start to understand this from the point of view of “inappropriate attention”, a mind that dwells on anything that it’s exaggerating certain qualities about. Initially by zooming out, and eventually developing appropriate attention that doesn’t exaggerate anything, we can get unstuck.

To really let go in a way that lasts, we need to be introduced to emptiness, the truth that there is no ultimate truth in our limited perceptions, or our sense of finite possibilities. It’s grasping at our self and other things in these limited, finite ways that keeps us stuck. By integrating a spacious experience free from such grasping in both meditation and daily life, we can find the middle way free from extremes.

In this retreat, Gen Norbu will introduce the initial stages of identifying inappropriate attention and allowing it to change into appropriate attention, and then the understanding and experience of emptiness that this matures into. Meditations on emptiness will be guided, and the “how to” of integration in daily life will be indicated.
